Before there were cards, before there were crystal balls, before any of the soft-edged tools of modern divination — there were marks cut into wood and bone by people who understood that certain shapes held power.

This class is a 120-minute immersion into the Elder Futhark — the oldest and most widely practiced runic system, comprising 24 staves arranged across three great families. This workshop treats the runes with the full weight they deserve: as historical artifacts with deep linguistic roots, as mythic symbols embedded in a living cosmology, and as a practical divination system you can begin working with the same day you leave.

We begin at the root of the runic tree — with Odin hanging nine days and nights on Yggdrasil, sacrificing himself to himself, reaching down into the void until the runes rose to meet him. This origin story is not decorative mythology. It is the interpretive key to everything that follows: the runes are not given. They are earned through attention, stillness, and a willingness to look into difficult places. Understanding this changes how you hold them.

From that foundation, the workshop moves through all 24 staves. You won't simply memorize keywords. You'll understand each rune as a living symbol with a shape, a sound, a story, and a place in a larger pattern of meaning.

The second half of the workshop turns to practice. You'll learn the fundamental difference between working with runes and working with cards — the tactile, physical weight of stone or wood in the hand is part of the reading, not incidental to it. You'll work with the Nornic three-rune cast, and practice the single-stave draw as a daily wisdom tool. You'll learn to interpret Merkstave — the reversed or fallen rune — not as a threat, but as an invitation into shadow and hidden meaning.

The class closes with practical guidance on crafting or sourcing your own set — because there is magic in the making — along with a daily stave practice to carry the runes into your waking life

By the end of this course, you will understand the Elder Futhark not merely as a divination tool but as a complete symbolic language rooted in Norse cosmology, mythic sacrifice, and a living philosophy of fate. You'll know the origin story of the runes and why it matters to the practice. You'll leave with a set of runes and a daily practice you can begin that same evening, and the foundational fluency to continue deepening your relationship with the runes.
